The Low Down on Low Back Pain

Did you know that back pain is one of the primary reasons people decide to see their doctor? This is a condition that affects many people in our country and can lead to missed work, a reduced quality of life and significant medical expense. So what can be done about it?

Often times being seen for low back pain can lead to expensive imaging. We often have patients who believe imaging will help to determine the cause of their problems. While this seems self evident, the reality is that x-rays and MRIs have poor reliability in determining causes of back pain. They also add significant cost to care. Individuals seeking care for low back pain who go to physical therapy save a significant amount of money and can get an accurate examination to address their problem.

Health Services Research published a study for cost of care spanning 1 year from physical therapy referral vs MRI in people with low back pain. On average a patient who received physical therapy spent $504 dollars over 3.8 visits vs $1,306 in the MRI group. Over the next year those costs were $1,871 for the physical therapy group and $6,664 for the MRI group. The number of procedures that are likely to occur from imaging is much higher, and the chances of “over-treating” with interventions that aren’t necessary is higher as well.

Our practice challenges itself to deliver the best care we can for a reasonable cost. You receive care from a physical therapist who has undergone doctoral education and has the examination skills to ensure accurate assessment of orthopedic pain while ruling out other serious causes. Every person we see is given the time they need to discuss their problem and receive a comprehensive examination. Patients are treated the day they are examined and we strive to deliver pain relief immediately. We work with patients to identify the root cause of their pain and develop a plan with them to meet their needs.
